Motivational Interviewing: Intermediate Training

The primary goal of Motivational Interviewing is to increase readiness to change by exploring discrepancy and resolving ambivalence. This workshop is intended to enhance the skills of behavioral health providers proficient in Motivational Interviewing strategies to maximize the application of clinical strategies. Proficiency in basic Motivational Interviewing is an assumed starting point and the workshop will focus on intermediate skills and exercises to maximize the use of MI. A focus of the importance of eliciting change talk and responding to client’s struggle to maintain their point of view.

This intensive 1-day training is designed to deepen behavioral health practitioner’s ability to use this evidence based clinical method to enhance change behaviors and outcomes. This course is appropriate for behavioral health, social workers, criminal justice, health practitioners, and social work.

Presenter: Kate Speck, PhD, MAC, LADC
Kate has over 40 years’ licensed experience in addictions with a Master of Addictions and an MA in Adult Education. She is on call Senior Research Manager at the UNL Public Policy Center, and teaches graduate courses in addictions. She has a strong background in prevention and treatment settings, substance abuse prevention/intervention, addiction in families, pregnant and parenting women, and training and education. She is a member of MINT (International Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers) since 2000, and has provided training and technical assistance nationally in the use of Motivational Interviewing. She is also a Master Trainer for Clinical Supervision, Suicide Prevention, and Disaster Behavioral Health.
